AutoCAD Polygon Command Tutorial

A polygon is an enclosed multisided figure. You could draw a polygon in AutoCAD® with multiple line commands but the more sides that you wanted the more complicated it would be to maintain it. It would also be difficult to make sure that all the angles and dimensions were correct.

The AutoCAD polygon command makes this a piece of cake. Click the polygon icon on the draw toolbar. AutoCAD® will ask you for the number of sides. Enter the number of sides. AutoCAD® then asks for the center point or edge. Click for the center point. You can now make this inscribed inside a circle, or circumscribed about a circle. Press <Enter> to make the polygon inscribed in a circle. You must now enter a radius. Then you are finished creating a polygon that is inscribed inside a circle. This means that the points of the polygon will be touching the edge of an imaginary circle whose radius you have specified. This makes the entire polygon inside this imaginary circle.

It is easy to make a polygon circumscribed about a circle. This means that the flat edges will be touching the edge of an imaginary circle, but the points of the polygon will be outside of that circle. Repeat the above process but enter "C" to specify circumscribed about a circle. Continue with the AutoCAD command and you will see the result. - See more at our AutoCAD Tutorials page.
